Plaza de Bolívar
historicThe political and spiritual heart of Colombia since 1539. This vast square has witnessed revolutions, presidential inaugurations, and the 1985 Palace of Justice siege — one of the darkest days in Colombian history, when guerrillas stormed the building and the military responded with tanks. Today it's flanked by the Capitol, the Cathedral, and the Palace of Justice rebuilt from ashes. Pigeons outnumber people here, and street vendors sell hot chocolate with cheese — Bogotá's signature comfort.
The Cathedral Primada is on the east side. Look for the bronze Bolívar statue — it was the first public monument erected in Colombia, in 1846.
Catedral Primada de Colombia
religionThe largest cathedral in Colombia, built between 1807 and 1823 in neoclassical style on the exact site where the first mass in Bogotá was celebrated in 1538. Inside lie the remains of Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, the Spanish conquistador who founded the city. The cathedral has been rebuilt four times — earthquakes and ambition kept demanding something grander. Its towering nave and quiet chapels feel worlds away from the chaos of La Candelaria's streets just outside.
Step inside — it's free and the acoustics are extraordinary. The Chapel of the Sagrario next door is a hidden baroque jewel most visitors walk past.
