Galata Tower

architecture

A 67-meter stone tower built by Genoese colonists in 1348 as the anchor of their fortified trading quarter across the Golden Horn from Constantinople. Originally called the Tower of Christ, it has served as a watchtower, fire lookout, prison, and observatory. Legend credits Hezarfen Ahmed Celebi with gliding from the tower across the Bosphorus using artificial wings in 1632 — a claim likely embellished but widely celebrated. The observation deck offers a 360-degree panorama of the Old City, Bosphorus, and Asian shore. The surrounding Galata neighborhood retains its cosmopolitan Genoese-Ottoman character.

Skip the queue for the tower interior and instead walk up the steep streets to the base — the views from the surrounding cafes are nearly as good. The Galata Mevlevi Lodge nearby holds whirling dervish ceremonies.

Galata Bridge

culture

A double-decker bridge spanning the Golden Horn, connecting the Old City to Beyoglu since 1845 (the current bridge is the fifth version, from 1994). The upper deck carries traffic and tram lines, flanked by dozens of fishermen whose lines dangle over the railing at all hours — an iconic Istanbul scene. The lower deck houses a row of fish restaurants. The bridge is where Istanbul's two worlds meet: the historic peninsula to the south, the cosmopolitan Beyoglu quarter to the north. Watching the sunset from here with the silhouette of mosques and minarets is one of Istanbul's defining moments.

The fishermen are friendly — they'll often explain what they're catching. The lower-deck restaurants are touristy; instead, buy a balik ekmek (fish sandwich) from the boats at the Eminonu end.
